‘Friendship’

‘Exquisite phrasing and warm, true harmonies…a serving of celestial sounds.’
The Sydney Morning Herald, August 2008

Seraphim Trio celebrates fifteen years of chamber music with a very special series: Friendship. Friendship lies at the heart of chamber music, and in these three innovative concerts, we celebrate this. 2009 is an exciting year for us, as we move our Melbourne concerts to the new Melbourne Recital Centre. Our concerts in Adelaide’s Grainger Studio will be enhanced by a sparkling new Steinway, while in Sydney, we remain in the beautiful and historic surrounds of the Independent Theatre. We invite you to join us in one of our three musical homes, for a year – long celebration of friendship.

Lest we Forget

Trio élégiaque No. 1 in G minor
RACHMANINOFF

Piano Trio in D major, Op. 70 No. 1, ‘Ghost’
BEETHOVEN

Piano Trio No. 2 in E minor, Op. 67
SHOSTAKOVICH

Seraphim Trio dedicates this concert to the memory of war, exploring friendship, heroism and grief, through readings and music. Rachmaninoff’s early, tragic Trio élégiaque No. 1 is paired with Beethoven’s masterful ‘Ghost’ trio, dating from his heroic period. The concert concludes with Shostakovich’s Piano Trio No. 2, composed during the Second World War: an elegy for the composer’s closest friend, and a striking work of protest.

Trio in G minor, Op. 17
CLARA SCHUMANN

Fantasiestücke in A minor for Piano Trio, Op. 88
ROBERT SCHUMANN

Piano Trio in B major, Op. 8
JOHANNES BRAHMS

In September 1853, after meeting the young Brahms, Robert Schumann jotted a few words into his journal: ‘Visit from Brahms, a genius’. Thus began one of history’s great three – way friendships, between Brahms and the two Schumanns. In this recital, Seraphim Trio explores this legendary relationship, performing works from all three composers, alongside readings from their letters.
